Donkey calf raise on the APEX Barrett Belt Squat

The Barrett Belt Squat attaches to the APEX adjustable bench. As a belt squat it feels really good: the starting position is ideal and the depth is strong as belt squats go. But it is also a lever arm that can load almost anything positioned right below you, and that opens up a lot more than squats.

What this solves

I wanted a calf raise that keeps the knee straight so the gastrocnemius can contribute fully, loads through the hips instead of the spine, and keeps me stable enough to push every rep hard. A seated calf raise bends the knee, and because the gastrocnemius crosses the knee, that changes how much it can contribute.

Components and their role

02

Belt squat belt

Connects the lever arm to my hips. The load goes through the hips, so nothing sits on the spine while I lean forward.

03

Belt squat handles

Set at a height where I can lean over and support my arms on them. That support is what turns this into a stable donkey calf raise position.

Why I like this setup

Copy-ready breakdown

I attach the belt squat belt to the Barrett Belt Squat lever arm so the load sits at my hips, set the belt squat handles at a height where I can lean over and support my arms on them, and stand on the U4C Fitness Calf Curve. That gives me a stable donkey calf raise with a straight knee to bias the gastrocnemius, and no load on my spine.
